Colorado Energy $aving Partners
Managing Agency Colorado http://www.colorado.gov
Program Description
In Colorado, the Energy $aving Partners (E$P) program weatherizes more than 3,200 homes every year. These households save an average of 20 percent on their monthly heating bills after the weatherization work is completed. The dollar savings alone make a big difference for the families. In addition, weatherization makes the home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The home also is made safer as E$P’s technicians always check furnaces and appliances for carbon monoxide. This measure makes a life-or-death difference for the homes’ occupants. Agency technicians also tune up and repair furnaces and hot water heaters, add insulation to attics and crawl spaces, conduct air leakage tests and seal air leaks.
Weatherization work makes a daily impact on low-income-families. Weatherization also benefits the community by preventing the “export” of energy dollars, employing skilled weatherization crews and contractors, reducing power plant emissions and improving the local environment.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Colorado, your household’s annual income before taxes must not exceed $21,660 if one person lives in the household; $29,140 if two people live in the household; $36,620 if three people live in the household; $44,100 if four people live in the household; $51,580 if five people live in the household; $59,060 if six people live in the household; $66,540 if seven people live in the household, or $74,020 if eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $7,480 for each additional person in the home.

10 Unforgettable Colorado Train Rides
Ride back in time on Colorado’s scenic and historic railroads, some of which traverse still-wild terrain that can’t be easily experienced by any other form of transit.
Before you book, check the trains’ websites for information on fun themed and seasonal excursions: fall-color photo trips, wine-and-dine tours, mystery dinners, winter North Pole festivities and more.
1. Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The highest train in the U.S. brings riders to the summit of America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak. In contrast to the vintage track and beautifully restored station, the modern cars with expansive windows offer views of purple mountains majesty.
Start and End Point: Manitou Springs
2. Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad
This ideal route for seeing Colorado in its autumn-color glory reaches up into the Continental Divide through hairpin turns along the upper Arkansas River Valley. Keep an eye out for Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive, the state’s two tallest peaks.
Start and End Points: Leadville and Climax
3. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad
Originally, these workaday trains brought supplies to inaccessible mining settlements. Today, three routes run along the edge of the San Isabel National Forest and take riders past historic places still virtually inaccessible any other way. In the warmer months, riders can often see bears along the route to La Veta.
Start and End Points: La Veta/Alamosa, Alamosa/Antonito or Alamosa/Monte Vista
4. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
This coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive runs 200 feet above the Animas River, featuring views of majestic peaks as it passes through the remote canyons and wilderness of the Animas Gorge and San Juan National Forest.
Start and End Points: Durango and Silverton
5. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad
Several stops along the route of this family-owned railroad provide views and photo ops of Pikes Peak and old mining camps, as well as the opportunity to hear the train whistle ricochet off the walls of Echo Valley.
Start and End Points: Cripple Creek and Victor
6. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
This 1880 vintage line is best known for its appearance in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Watch for some of the railroad’s original buildings, and check out the large collection of rolling stock in the historic depots on either end of the route.
Start and End Points: Antonito, CO, and Chama, NM
7. Royal Gorge Route Railroad
Comfy panoramic-view cars open to the spectacular walls of the Royal Gorge beside the fast-flowing Arkansas River on this historic railroad’s tracks. The trip can be complemented with a view of the gorge from one of the world’s highest suspension bridges.
Start and End Point: Cañon City
8. Georgetown Loop Railroad
To connect the mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume, only two miles apart through a steep, narrow canyon, the railroad’s 1880s builders constructed tracks that corkscrewed up more than 600 feet in elevation on four bridges.
Start and End Points: Silver Plume and Georgetown
9. California Zephyr
This daily Amtrak train is not antique, but it certainly is scenic. For unsurpassed comfort and convenience, this is the choice for a spectacular high-speed tour through the Rocky Mountains.
Start and End Points: Chicago and San Francisco, with six stops in Colorado between Fort Morgan, Denver and Grand Junction
10. Southwest Chief
A second Amtrak line travels through the southeast corner of Colorado, providing access to classic American Southwest landscapes and attractions such as Bent’s Old Fort and Koshare Indian Kiva and Museum.
Start and End Points: Chicago and Los Angeles, with stops in Colorado at Trinidad, La Junta and Lamar

See For Free: 5 Things to Do with the Kids
1. Trail Ridge Road
Take an adventure on one of the world’s best nature-made roller coasters, the ride along Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road. Open from Memorial Day to late autumn, the scenic byway — topping out at 12,183 feet above sea level — is the highest continuous paved road in the United States. Kids love being the first to spot a ptarmigan or bighorn sheep and wildflowers from every color in the rainbow.
2. U.S. Mint Tour
More than 50 million coins are produced each year at Denver’s United States Mint. A behind-the-scenes tour details the history of money and the coin-stamping process, and kids are fascinated by the huge machines that count, sort and bag the coins. You’ll also see the second-largest deposit of solid-gold bullion in the U.S. after Fort Knox. Be sure to book your tour online in advance.
3. Take the Gondola to Mountain Village
Getting to Mountain Village is half the fun. The 13-minute ride from the floor of Telluride’s cozy box canyon over the ridge to Mountain Village offers a panoramic view peppered with waterfalls, mountain peaks and the colorful old mining shacks in the town below. At the top, a handful summer activities await, including Adventure Rock bouldering, the St. Sophia Nature Center, a disc golf course and hiking and biking trails.
4. National Wildlife Refuges
Colorado is home to seven National Wildlife Refuges that are free and open to the public. The refuge system was created to conserve America’s fish, wildlife and natural areas across the country. Visitors can spot everything from bison and moose to hawks and bald eagles living and nesting among some of the state’s most spectacular scenery, and most offer educational and nature activities for kids from hikes and fishing ponds to lectures and interpretive displays. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal refuge just outside Denver just opened a new visitor center, with a fun Learning Lab where kids can enjoy hands-on activities such as dissecting an owl pellet, looking inside a live bee tree and exploring wildlife dioramas.
5. South Park City Museum
In the 1950s, a preservation-minded group saw the once-booming South Park area (near Fairplay) fading away and asked the locals to scour their attics and barns for artifacts and relics from its past. More than 40,000 authentic 1880s heirlooms and artifacts turned up and were used to re-construct a town with 40 original buildings that imitate life as it was at the end of the 19th century. You can actually go inside most of the buildings, and there are very few “don’t touch” signs. The museum welcomes kids under six for free.

10 Places to Fish With the Family
Load up your tackle box and picnic basket to create lasting family memories on a Colorado fishing adventure. You’ll find easily accessible ponds, lakes and streams that make the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon catching the state’s famous rainbow trout. Sure, the fishing is unbeatable at these 10 spots, but they made the list because they offer so much more: hiking, museums, playgrounds and pools – the kids will be begging to come back.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife provides a wealth of information about fishing with your little ones. Take a look at their suggestions for making the most of the fishing experience, and their interactive map of the top 101(+) places to take a kid fishing. (Note: Unless otherwise noted, anyone over 16 will need a license at the locations below.)
1. Mt. Evans Trout Fishing, Idaho Springs
Just 45 minutes west of Denver, you’ll find the charming Grandma & Grandpa’s Fishing Pond. The generously stocked pond teams with rainbow trout ready to bite. Children of all ages will also get a kick out of the resident reindeer, gentle creatures that are always happy to see visitors. Extend your trip in one of the overnight cabins and make the short drive to the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. (Since it’s privately owned, there’s no license needed to fish here.)
2. Schryver Park Kids Pond, Manitou Springs
One of Manitou Springs’ claims to fame is the mineral spring water that the town was built around, and this small pond is the perfect place for the whole family to sink a line into those famous waters. On the east side of town, the pond is fed by Fountain Creek and shaded by giant cottonwood trees. Each spring, the Colorado Division of Wildlife stocks it with catchable trout. Other activities include a community swimming pool and playground.
3. Fort Collins City Park Lake, Fort Collins
Also known as Sheldon Lake, this pond is a lively urban fishing hole chock-full of rainbow trout, bluegill and crappies. Perch on the large wooden deck near plenty of picnic tables and drop your line in over the railing – it won’t be long before you feel a tug on your pole. The evening is a popular time for family fishing, when a friendly spirit fills the park. Stick around for more activities, like City Park Pool, paddle boats, a miniature train, a huge playground, basketball courts and a pottery studio.
4. Corn Lake, Grand Junction
One of the most fabulous destinations for reeling in the day’s catch is just outside of town. With both warm- and cold-water fishing, the lake is stocked with catchable-size rainbow trout and has self-sustaining populations of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. The site is ADA accessible and offers public restrooms and picnic tables, too. One mile to the west is the Colorado River Wildlife Area, which features hiking, wildlife observation and environmental education activities.
5. St. Vrain State Park, Longmont
Only a short jaunt from either Denver or Fort Collins, St. Vrain State Park offers more fishing ponds than anyone could visit in one trip. Sandpiper and Mallard ponds win best spots for families because of their accessibility from the parking lot, proximity to restrooms and heavy-handed stocking of rainbow trout, channel catfish, bass, perch, bluegill and saugeye. Keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife, like eagles and blue herons. While you’re there, also check out easy hiking trials and new camping sites.
6. Anticline Fishing Pond, Pueblo
In southern Colorado, Lake Pueblo is a mecca for boating, but if you’re there with the kids, the smaller Anticline Fishing Pond is not to be missed. The pier makes the ideal place to perch for an afternoon of hooking walleye, wiper and bass, as well as stocked trout. Only steps away are the swimming beach, playground, zoo, public restrooms and picnic tables. Of course, the kiddos will love fishing off a boat, too; rentals are available at either of the two marinas.
7. Trout Haven Ranch & Fishing Pond, Estes Park
Although we wouldn’t compare it to shooting fish in a barrel, at Trout Haven Ranch everyone is guaranteed to catch something. Plus, you can have a the fun of fishing in the Rockies, without fussing over the details of purchasing a license, buying or renting equipment, or cleaning and freezing the fish once you’ve caught them – all that’s taken care of. Book a night at the on-site cabins or lodge so you can take advantage of other Estes Park activities, like biking, hiking, rafting, horseback riding and more.
8. Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood
Where the urban landscape of Denver gives way to the scenic foothills, this easy-to-find fishing hole awaits. The whole family will love hanging out on the piers to pull in trout, bass, bluegill and perch from the big, scenic lake. For more ideas on exploring Bear Creek Lake Park, head to the visitors center, where you can see wildlife exhibits, talk to park rangers and plan your trip.
9. Chipeta Lake State Wildlife Area, Montrose
In the shadow of the majestic San Juan Mountains rests this humble little lake, which is perfect for kids because you can drive right up to it, there’s ample casting room and the banks aren’t steep. Plus, everyone will catch something because stocked trout, sunfish, bass and catfish thrive in its waters. Sneak a little education into your fishing trip by learning about Chief Ouray, his wife Chipeta and more American Indian history at the Ute Indian Museum that is located within the wildlife area.
10. Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park
One of the best things about fishing this alpine paradise is the unlimited variety. On the west side of the park, Lake Granby, Grand Lake and Shadow Lake provide commercial marinas and boating around some of the largest bodies of water in Colorado. On the east side, Lake Estes and Lake Marys are smaller and offer a more rustic and private outing. You can also add another level of adventure by scheduling a horseback ride that takes you to and from some more exotic fishing spots, or camp in the park and hit a bunch of different ones.

10 Free Things to Do in Colorado
1. The Great Outdoors
Enjoying Colorado’s natural beauty is the most obvious budget-friendly option. Just-right temperatures year-round draw outdoor
enthusiasts to our open lands and thousands of miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing,
wildlife watching, fishing and much more. Check out 99 Gorgeous Places in A Land Called Colorado for ideas on where to head first.
2. National Wildlife Refuges
Colorado is home to seven National Wildlife Refuges that are free and open to the public. The refuge system was created to
conserve America’s fish, wildlife and natural areas across the country. Each of Colorado’s refuges is home to diverse ecosystems
where visitors can spot everything from bison and moose to hawks and bald eagles living and nesting among some of the state’s
most spectacular scenery.
3. Geologic Marvels
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Morrison is comprised of massive, slanting red-rock outcroppings that rise from the earth to
create an acoustically ideal natural amphitheater. Joggers love to run up and down the calf-burning steps (on non-concert days),
hikers weave around the rock formations on a network of easy trails and all visitors enjoy the views of downtown Denver. In
Colorado’s Springs’ Garden of the Gods, those who walk the trails that meander around the park’s otherworldly red-rock figures
search for geologic formations in the shapes of kissing camels, cathedral spires, praying hands and sleeping giants — and a few
that seem to teeter in gravity’s grip.
4. People Watching
16th Street Mall and Pearl Street Mall — in Denver and Boulder respectively — are the two most popular outdoor pedestrian malls in
Colorado. They’re also the perfect place to get to know the character of these two Front Range towns. Peek in the shops, lounge on
green areas and benches, and watch the local characters come and go.
5. Air Force Academy and Olympic Training Center Tours
Take in two symbols of American pride in Colorado Springs. The U.S. Air Force Academy’s visitor center and iconic chapel give you
a glimpse of cadet life, academy history and the chapel’s beautiful stained-glass windows. The U.S. Olympic Training Center is home
to a state-of-the-art sports medicine and science center, headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee and hundreds of training
athletes. Tours include a film, the Olympic Hall of Fame and a walking tour of the complex.
6. Brewery Tours
With more than 100 breweries, Colorado’s love of beer is well established. Many around the state offer tours of their operations. See
how major producers and craft brewers use the mountain spring water to make well-known varieties and seasonal blends. For a
different kind of brew, Celestial Seasonings in Boulder offers free tours of its herbal tea factory.
7. Dinosaur Walks
In Picket Wire Canyonlands outside La Junta, you can stand in a three-toed impression left in the bedrock by a brontosaurus 150
million years ago. The footprints, located in North America’s largest dinosaur track site, are reached after a very flat five-mile hike,
bike or horseback ride. At Dinosaur Ridge near Morrison, you can take self-guided tours (guided tours are $4) of exposed fossils and
footprints, as well as the excavation sites, including the site where the world’s first stegosaurus was discovered in 1877.
8. Only-in-Colorado Fanfare
Coloradans celebrate heritage and holidays with great pageantry. Events listed on our site range from holiday fests to historic
tributes to just plain zany gatherings. Check our listings for free winter carnivals, farmers’ markets, artwalks, Oktoberfests, balloon
festivals and much more, which can be searched by city, region, date and event type.
9. Scenic and Historic Byways
While driving is not technically free, you won’t have to pay admission on Colorado’s scenic and historic byways — 25 routes that
pass through the Rocky Mountains, the canyons and gorges of the Western Slope and the sun-kissed prairies of the eastern plains.
With so many pathways connecting the dots between historic sites and vast acres of majestic scenery, Colorado’s the best state in
the union for road tripping.
10. A Taste of the Wild West
Colorado has dozens of downtown historic districts that offer a peek into the state’s rough-and-tumble past. Breckenridge, Crested
Butte, Durango, Telluride, Georgetown, Manitou Springs and many others have maintained several of the buildings built in the towns’
earliest days. Check each town’s visitor center for walking tours of sites with the most storied bygones.

Program Description
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is the oldest and largest of the Child Nutrition Programs, celebrating 50 years in 1996. It
is a Federally assisted meal program that provides balanced, low-cost or free lunches to thousands of children in Colorado each day.
Since 1946, the National School Lunch Program has made it possible for schools to serve appealing lunches designed to meet the
needs of children. In recent years, concerns have emerged regarding the overall nutritional content of school meals. These
concerns address findings that the diet of Americans has changed from being low in nutrients and adequate in calories to containing
an overabundance of calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. At the same time, Americans eat too few grains, fruits, and
vegetables. A good diet can help to reduce the occurrence of chronic diseases and promote good health and well-being.
The School Breakfast Program (SBP) provides a nutritious morning meal. This program is recognized as one of the most beneficial
of the Federal nutrition programs. It meets a vital need of feeding thousands of children in Colorado, who otherwise may not eat a
nutritious breakfast. Participation in the program has been shown to improve learning and test performance. Specific “meal
patterns” are required in the SBP, and schools that participate in the SBP receive funding assistance similar to the National School
Lunch Program.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Colorado and a parent or primary caregiver
responsible for a child(ren) who attends school (high school or under). Those who qualify must also have an annual household
income before taxes that must not exceed $26,955 if two people live in the household; $33,874 if three people live in the household;
$40,793 if four people live in the household; $47,712 if five people live in the household; $54,631 if six people live in the household;
$61,550 if seven people live in the household; and $68,469 if eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $6,919 for
each additional person in the home.
