Program Description
The Virginia School Breakfast and Lunch Programs are Federally assisted meal programs, which provide nutritionally balanced,
low-cost or free lunches to school aged children. The Virginia Department of Education, School Nutrition Programs, administers
the program at the state level, which operates the program through agreements with local school districts. Participating schools
must serve breakfasts and lunches that meet Federal nutrition standards, and must provide free and reduced-price meals to
eligible children.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Virginia and a parent or primary caregiver
responsible for a child(ren) who attends school (high school or under). Those who qualify must also have an annual household
income before taxes that must not exceed $26,955 if two people live in the household; $33,874 if three people live in the household;
$40,793 if four people live in the household; $47,712 if five people live in the household; $54,631 if six people live in the household;
$61,550 if seven people live in the household; $68,469 if eight people live in the household; and $75,388 if more than eight people
live in the household. For larger households, add $6,919 for each additional person in the home.

Program Description
The Virginia Summer Meals for Kids program provides nutritious meals to children who would normally receive free or reduced
price meals when school is in session. This helps children to maintain a nutritious diet and helps their families to stretch their food
dollars during the summer months.
The program is offered in many and various locations such as parks, playgrounds, housing authorities, day camps, churches,
community centers, etc. Often the meal service is combined with learning and recreational activities for the children.

Program Description
The Food Stamp Program serves as the first line of defense against hunger for Virginia Residents. It enables low-income families
to buy nutritious food with coupons and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Food stamp recipients spend their benefits to buy
eligible food in authorized retail food stores. The Program is the cornerstone of the food assistance programs, and provides
crucial support to needy households and to those making the transition from welfare to work.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Virginia and fall into one of two groups: (1) those
with a current bank balance (savings and checking combined) under $2,001, or (2) those with a current bank balance (savings and
checking combined) under $3,001 who share their household with a person or persons age 60 and over, or with a person with a
disability (a child, your spouse, a parent, or yourself). For either group, you must also have an annual household income of less than
$13,284 if one person lives in the household; $17,808 if two people live in the household; $22,332 if three people live in the
household; $26,856 if four people live in the household; $31,380 if five people live in the household; $35,904 if six people live in the

Program Description
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and is operated through local health departments, satellite and mobile clinics in Virginia. The Virginia WIC Program serves low-
income pregnant, lactating and postpartum women and children up to age five.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Virginia, pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum
woman, infant or child up to 5 years of age and: (1) are individually determined by a health professional to be at nutrition risk; and,
(2) meet an income standard, or are determined automatically income eligible. A person who participates or has family members
who participate in certain other benefit programs, such as the Food Stamp Program, Medicaid or Temporary Assistance for Needy
Families, automatically meets the income eligibility requirement.

Program Description
The Special Milk Program provides milk to children in schools, childcare institutions and eligible camps that do not participate in
other Federal child nutrition meal service programs. Schools that participate in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast
Programs can participate in the Special Milk Program for half-day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children who do not have
access to a school meals program. The program reimburses schools and institutions for the milk they serve.
General Program Requirements
Any child in a school or institution that participates in the Special Milk Program can get milk. Schools may elect to offer free milk to
low-income children. In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of West Virginia, your

Program Description
The Head Start program (for children ages 3-5) and Early Head Start program (for pregnant women, infants, and toddlers) promote
school readiness for children in low-income families by providing comprehensive educational, health, nutritional, and social
services. Parents play a large role in the programs, both as primary educators of their children and as participants in
administering the programs locally. Both programs provide pre-literacy and literacy experiences in a multi-cultural environment.
Parents are also provided social services, including assistance with childcare. Services are also available to migrant and seasonal
farm worker families.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Virginia, you must be a parent or primary
caregiver responsible for a child who is too young for public school and your household's annual income before taxes must not
exceed $10,830 if one person lives in the household; $14,570 if two people live in the household; $18,310 if three people live in the
household; $22,050 if four people live in the household; $25,790 if five people live in the household; $29,530 if six people live in the
household; $33,270 if seven people live in the household; $37,010 if eight people live in the household; and $40,750 if more than
eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $3,740 for each additional person in the home.
If you do not meet these criteria, you may still qualify if you are a U.S. national, citizen or permanent resident whose financial status
is low income or very low income, who is under-employed, unemployed or about to become unemployed, facing pregnancy, less
than 19 years of age yourself, or the parent or primary caregiver for children under the age of 19 years. Other qualifications may

10 . Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum in Winchester has interactive exhibits in natural history, machinery and art as well as A
Stop Along the Moccasin Trail. The Emergency Room in "Our Town" is great for future medical professionals. The motto here is "to

11 . Children's Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth is the largest children's museum in the commonwealth. The most popular exhibit
here is the antique toy and model train collection, one of the largest on the East Coast. Wow! And don't miss the Bubble Exhibit.
12. Harrisonburg Children's Museum is for ages 2-12 who will find a space buzzing with activity and alive with learning
opportunities! Activities include drama, creative arts, science and technology.

22. Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge is Virginia's only drive-thru zoo — just like being on a real African safari! See hundreds of

as giraffes! Domestic animals can be petted at the Petting Zoo, too.
23. Children of all ages delight in the Children’s Garden at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The garden is a “learning landscape”
where children can enjoy freedom to explore the natural world. An Adventure Pathway complete with boardwalks, bridges, and a
Leafy Overlook, a Tree House, and a water play area are just a few of the things kids can enjoy while at the garden.
24. Nauticus, The National Maritime Center in Norfolk features more than 150 interactive exhibits, giant screen films, exotic
aquaria, touch pools and shark petting experiences! Berthed nextdoor is the USS Wisconsin, which is one of the last and largest
battleships built by the U.S. Navy and is also open for tours!
25. Virginia Living Museum in Newport News is the place to go if you're wild about wildlife. See the combination native wildlife park,
science museum, aquarium, botanical preserve and planetarium! This place has it all! Plan to spend the whole day!
26. Virginia Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach features the largest collection of Chesapeake Bay fish in the world! Children
can touch gentle stingrays, horseshoe crabs and other creatures of the sea.
The museum has several interactive exhibits and activities, such as build-your-own hurricane and tong for oysters! Throughout the
year, various seagoing cruises engage children, such as Whale Watching, Dolphin Watching and Ocean Collections boat trips.
Children love the adventure, and so do tweens and teens!
27. Natural Bridge Zoo in Natural Bridge features more than 400 exotic reptiles, birds and mammals. See the breeding center for
rare and endangered species. Kids will love the petting area, too.
28. Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk is home to 300 animals, such as elephants, Siberian tigers, monkeys, reptiles and birds.
29. Walk in the Wild Nature Museum opened last summer in Woodlawn in Carroll County. See 150 stuffed animals from Africa,
India, Alaska and Canada showcased in displays that highlight the animal's habitat.

30. Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke is a great place to see trains — models, electric, diesel and steam! Also, see
autos, trucks, carriages and the African-American transportation exhibit. Plenty of hands-on exhibits make this museum
extremely kid-friendly! So chug on down and spend the day.
31 . Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton features the new Adventures in Flight Gallery! Children can experience flight controls
and wing walking, ride in a World War II bomber and become an air traffic controller. This is such a cool place, plan to spend the
entire day!
32. Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston has a cool supersonic spy plane, the SR-71 Blackbird! Children can get up close to
replicas of three Wright Brothers' gliders, see Richmond's own Admiral Richard E. Byrd's plane that flew over Antarctica, as well
as look at World War II dioramas, antique automobiles and other aviation exhibits.
33. National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is an extension of the Smithsonian's and located near Dulles
Airport off Route 28. This huge facility includes flight simulators, an IMAX theater as well as important icons of aviaition and space.

34. Morgan-McClure Motorsports Museum in Abingdon is a must for racecar fans! See the actural cars that won Daytona 500 in the
'90s and see uniforms, pit equipment and wrecks from other famous races! A must for NASCAR fans of all ages!
35. The Jumbo Antique Fire Engine Museum in Staunton houses the only remaining 1911 Robinson Chemical Fire Engine as well as
a collection of fire service items from the Civil War!

36. The Toy Museum at Natural Bridge is the largest collection of childhood memorabilia on display in the world! Kids will get a kick
out of the toys their folks and grandfolks played with, featuring years from 1740-2000!
37. Natural Bridge Wax Museum in Natural Bridge features more than 150 figures, sound, light and animation!
38. American Celebration on Parade at Shenandoah Caverns is full of delighful parade floats from America's popular parades as
well as props and settings from important events in entertainment and political history!
Kid's love the character floats, such as Rug Rats and Cinderella in her carriage! Most of these massive floats are animated, too.
The floats on display change often, so if you havent't been in a while, you'll be sure to see something new!
39. The Mariners' Museum in Newport News features more than 500 years of seafaring adventure! Kids love the cool figureheads
and miniature ship models. They also can watch the conservation of real artifacts from the Civil War's ironclad USS Monitor,
brought to the surface from its watery grave in the Atlantic Ocean.
40. PJ's Carousel Collection in the historic district of Newbern is an actual factory where carousel animals are made, handpainted,
numbered and certified. No admission fee. Open weekdays only.
41 . ArtVenture Interactive Center within the Art Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke, is a participatory gallery designed to
make the visual arts come alive. Enjoy eight hands-on stations highlighting masterpieces from the museum's collection. This is a
family favorite!
42. The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is a new interactive family attraction in Portsmouth devoted to college sports,
media, Olympic, golf and Redskins exhibits, hands-on baseball, basketball, football and soccer activities. This is not your grand-
daddy's museum!
43. Haunted Monster Museum at Natural Bridge is bizarre and unique, like Scooby Doo meeting the Twilight Zone! Meet Professor
Cline who has done special effects for Disney and other theme parks!
44. Virginia S. Evans Doll Museum in South Hill features a collection of more than 500 dolls dating back to the 1800s and from
around the world.
45. Route 11 Potato Chip Factory is open for tours and free samples!

How Did People Live in the Old Days?
46 . Monacan Indian Village in Natural Bridge depicts Native American woodland culture with real Native Americans explaining their
way of life and demonstrating how they lived 300 years ago.
47. Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean features a small tenant farm family, their one-room farm house, animals and crops of
the 18th century. Children are encouraged to try their hand at many of the farm chores, such as feeding the animals, repairing
fences and churning butter!
48. Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg is the story of America's first permanent English colony. Children love seeing the
replicas of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607. Other highlights include the colonists' fort and a Powhatan
village.
49. Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil WarSoldier in Petersburg is one of the nation's finest Civil War
attractions. The 422-acre park has museums, a plantation home, living history demonstrations, battle reenactments and camp
setups. Kids love being right in the middle of a Civil War campsite and talking to the soldiers.
50. Historic Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park in Tazewell features Southwest Virginia from prehistoric times to the present.
Kids can take a guided tour through the park's log buildings and learn how people lived during the pioneer days of the region.
Sometimes, bluegrass bands perform on the porches, and folks picnic on the grounds.
51. Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton features life on four different farms -- German, Scots-Irish, English and American. Kids
love watching the farm animals and the farmers doing their chores. Special reenactments take place depending upon the season,
such as how various holidays were celebrated and how the farmers prepared for the winter, sowing and reaping seasons.
